AQUAPONICS

Aquaponics is a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by aquarium fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically  The plants, in turn, purify the water.  A simple system is shown in the diagram below (from the Hydrogardengeek site):

The Hydrogardengeek website provides an excellent introduction to Aquaponics.

Amtulnoor Grosser, Garrisonville Elementary, Stafford County Schools, is building an Aquaponics system for her 5th grade classroom.  She's using the AquaSprouts Garden, Self-Sustaining Desktop Aquarium Aquaponics Ecosystem Kit, designed for a standard 10 Gallon aquarium tank.  Aquaspsrouts provides a lot of helpful information, including how-to videos, about aquaponics and setting up your system.

She is journaling throughout the building of the system and pages from that journal are posted below.  The pages from her journal are reproduced in full so you can follow her progress in detail.  Click on the image to get a larger version of the page.
